There will soon be seven billion people on the planet. By 2045 global population is projected to reach nine billion. Can the planet take the strain?

National Geographic.  Sheesh.  You’re there on the couch, perusing panoramas, skimming scientific discoveries, when BAM! They hit you with one of those apocalyptic climate change articles that just makes you want to go live in a cave in the hills. That really chaps my hide.

But now, looking back on it, I didn’t just write this song about media overload. It’s also a message to my unborn son. I wrote it around the time my wife and I were engaged.  Subconsciously I think I was preparing for a change. And let’s face it. The idea of bringing an innocent baby into this world is pretty crazy. But through all the doubt runs a current of stubborn hopefulness. “A Kind of Silence” is a song for 7 billion.

A Kind of Silence

7 billion: quite a number, don’t you think?
Lead a horse to water, but how much is there left to drink?
Information: changing faster than you blink.
I don’t worry skating round the roller rink.

Paranoia: fact from fiction separate.
Take a number: don’t forget to vaccinate.
Pick a color, choose a style:
these are decisions that you fake.

There are wings that are beating in your chest.
Caterpillar, have butterfly effect.
Feel the pain, lift the weight that makes you strong.
Hear a kind of silence in the song.

The sky ain’t fallen, but there’s a hole above your head.
Chairmen, lawyers, clerks and Johns, we’re all asleep in the same bed.
No alarm to wake you.  No appointment you should make.
Imagination: there is one mind for you to make.

Population, erosion, chemical leaching, global warming,
War on terror, the recession, fries and a milkshake.
How’s your burger?  How do antibiotics taste?
So many questions. Skip the story and cut directly to the chase.
