David Bowie, Prince, AND Leonard Cohen?! And then there’s Trump. Yes, it’s been a tough year on many cultural fronts. That said, 2016 has had many redeeming moments, music-wise. You’ll find my best music discoveries for 2016 on the following Spotify playlist.
These songs were not necessarily written or recorded or released or promoted or performed in 2016. These are songs that I just happened to discover and enjoy this year. Camille Yarbrough released “Take Yo’ Praise” in 1975. I don’t know why it took me so long to find her, but I’m glad I finally did.
If you asked me to pick my favorite song, I probably could, but it would depend on what kind of mood I was in. If you asked me again tomorrow I’d probably have a different answer. Anyways it’s more interesting to me to find out what YOU like than to spend time splitting hairs over which of these excellent artifacts is the most excellent. Drop me a line!
Also… I picked these songs because I thought they were possibly the most accessible tracks from interesting albums. I don’t necessarily like interesting albums right away. Sometimes it takes a some work to truly appreciate something new and/or different. Hopefully this list provides some shortcuts into new territory for you, like it did for me.
I have a couple of acquaintances on the list. Jade Hendrix sang at my wedding. She’s just starting to get some traction around here in LA. And I jammed with a guy who sits in with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox this fall too.
