I’ve got a new song for Election Day. It’s called “Both Sides of the Fence.”  I’m releasing it exclusively by mailing list on Nov.8.

I love that line in “This Land is Your Land” by Woodie Guthrie.

As I went walking I saw a sign there

And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.”

But on the other side it didn’t say nothing.

I love the way he changes your point of view.

That’s something I try to do in my songwriting: to look at things from different points of view. Maybe that’s why I’m not in politics. In an election year it seems like everyone is talking about who is right or wrong, true or false. It’s all about creating division, about taking sides. “Both Sides of the Fence” is about remembering that we’re all human. We’re all guests on planet earth. I’m not sure who’s hosting the party, but I’m sure they’re not a republican or a democrat.

You can’t take it any more.

You’ve heard it all before.

Another man with a microphone’s

Got a chip on his funny bone.

Everyone is a guest on both sides of the fence.

What are you against?

We could move a mountain range,

But what’s the point this day and age?

Politics is such a joke,

But we don’t laugh or cry in fact we barely choke.

Everyone is a guest on both sides of the fence.

What are you against?

We could build a wall sky-high,

But who really wants to run and hide.

Let’s build a bomb of poetry.

When it goes off… to be or not to be.
